Paragliding in San Gil: Colombia's Best Tandem Flights

San Gil in the Santander department is known as Colombia’s adventure capital, and of all the activities on offer - white-water rafting, bungee jumping, rappelling - paragliding stands out for the views it delivers. The launch sites sit above the Río Fonce valley with sightlines across the corrugated Andean ridges that define this part of Colombia. On a clear day you can see the Chicamocha Canyon system in the distance, one of the deepest canyons in South America.

Tandem paragliding requires no experience, no special fitness, and runs most days of the year. For most visitors it is the first time they have seen their surroundings from altitude, and the 15 to 25 minutes of flight time is consistently reported as a highlight of any Colombia itinerary.

What to Expect on a Tandem Paragliding Flight

You will meet your pilot at a designated point in San Gil town or at your accommodation. Transport to the launch site takes 15 to 20 minutes and is included in most operator packages. At the launch site, your pilot will fit you into a harness, run through safety instructions - primarily that you run forward on take-off and keep your legs up during the descent - and connect you to the glider.

Take-off happens naturally from a grass slope: you and the pilot jog forward into the wind and the glider lifts within a few seconds. The first few moments are the most disorienting - a rapid transition from running to being airborne over a steep valley. After that the flight is smooth.

Thermal-dependent flights can last 25 to 40 minutes if conditions are good - the pilot works the air currents to gain altitude and extend the flight. Fixed-duration flights are typically 15 to 20 minutes. Landing is in a flat field below the launch site; your pilot handles the approach and you land feet-first at walking pace.

Operators in San Gil

Colombia Paragliding is one of the longest-running operators in San Gil, with certified pilots and an established safety record. Tandem flights typically start from COP 90,000 as of 2026 and include a video recording. Their pilots speak basic English. Bookings can be made directly at their office near the Parque El Gallineral or through your accommodation.

Sin Límites Aventura is a well-regarded multi-activity operator that includes paragliding as part of day packages combining rafting and other sports. Standalone paragliding flights are approximately COP 80,000 to 110,000 as of 2026. Their office is on Calle 12 in the San Gil town centre.

Macaws Adventure caters to a slightly higher-end market with longer flight durations and more experienced English-speaking pilots. Rates begin at approximately COP 120,000 as of 2026. They also offer aerial photography packages.

All reputable operators use certified pilots registered with Colombia’s Federación Colombiana de Vuelo Libre (FCVL). Ask to see pilot certification if it is not proactively offered.

Practical Information

Minimum requirements: Most operators set a minimum age of 14 years and a weight limit of 100 kilograms. Participants must be able to run on take-off. Heart conditions, pregnancy, and some musculoskeletal conditions may preclude flying - disclose relevant medical information when booking.

What to wear: Comfortable clothing suitable for 15°C (it will feel colder at altitude than on the ground). Closed-toe shoes with ankle support. Sunglasses with a strap to keep them on during flight.

When to book: San Gil is Colombia’s most visited adventure destination and paragliding slots can fill up in December and January. Book 24 to 48 hours in advance during peak season. In low season, same-day booking is generally fine.

What to bring: A small daypack with water and sunscreen. Your phone - many operators allow you to shoot your own video during flight. Travel insurance that explicitly covers aerial activities is strongly recommended; check your policy before departure.

Getting to San Gil

San Gil is 5 to 6 hours by bus from Bogotá’s Terminal de Transportes. Multiple companies operate this route; expect to pay approximately COP 45,000 to 70,000 as of 2026. From Bucaramanga, the capital of Santander, the bus takes 2 to 3 hours and costs approximately COP 20,000 to 35,000. There is no commercial airport in San Gil - the nearest is in Bucaramanga.

Other Adventures in San Gil

Paragliding pairs naturally with the rest of San Gil’s adventure portfolio. White-water rafting on the Río Fonce is available at beginner level (Class II-III) and is suitable for most adults. The Juan Curí waterfall, 20 kilometres from town, offers rappelling down the face of a 180-metre cascade - guides are available on-site. Bungee jumping operates from a bridge over the Río Chicamocha near the canyon viewpoint at Parque Nacional Chicamocha, approximately one hour from San Gil.

Most multi-day visitors to San Gil combine two or three activities across a two-night stay. The town itself is pleasant but not the reason to come - the landscape and the activity infrastructure are the draws.
