Festival Petronio Alvarez 2026

The Festival de Musica del Pacifico Petronio Alvarez is Colombia’s most important celebration of Afro-Colombian culture and Pacific Coast music. Held each August in Cali, the festival brings together musicians, dancers, artisans, and food producers from the Pacific departments of Choco, Valle del Cauca, Cauca, and Narino for six days of performances, competitions, and cultural exchange.

Who was Petronio Alvarez?

The festival takes its name from Patricio Romano Petronio Alvarez Quintero (1914—1966), a self-taught composer and musician from Buenaventura who is credited with composing “Mi Buenaventura,” one of the defining pieces of Pacific Colombian music. He represents the broader tradition of Pacific Colombian musical culture — rooted in African rhythms brought through the slave trade, blended with Indigenous and Spanish influences — that the festival exists to preserve and showcase.

What happens at the festival

The 2026 edition runs Wednesday 12 August to Monday 17 August. The heart of the festival is a competition (the concurso) across five musical categories: chirimia (traditional brass and percussion), marimba and traditional chants (the oldest form of Pacific music, also inscribed by UNESCO), violines caucanos, conjunto de cuerdas, and libre (open contemporary category). Groups from Pacific communities compete over several evenings in front of judges and large audiences at the main venue.

Beyond the competition, the festival hosts free outdoor stages running continuous performances from the afternoon into the early hours, a massive gastronomy market serving Pacific coastal cuisine (sopa de chontaduro, pescado en salsa de coco, pusandao de carne), artisan markets, and academic forums on Afro-Colombian cultural heritage.

In recent years the festival has been held at Centro Cultural Buen Vivir in Cali. Capacity is large but popular evenings fill quickly.

Entry and tickets

Entry to the main festival grounds is free during daytime hours. Evening concerts and competition rounds sometimes require a ticket or wristband; check the official website for the 2026 ticketing structure once confirmed, typically published in June. The gastronomy market operates throughout the festival and requires no ticket for entry.

Getting there

Cali’s Alfonso Bonilla Aragon Airport handles direct flights from Bogota (about 1 hour) and Medellin. From the city centre to the festival venue, taxis and app-based ride services are the most convenient option. Public buses from the El Centro neighbourhood reach the area but routes can be confusing for first-time visitors.

August is the festival’s dry season in Cali — temperatures are around 28 to 32 degrees Celsius during the day and stay warm at night. The atmosphere is familial and intensely musical; this is not a tourist spectacle but a living cultural event for the communities whose music and traditions are being celebrated.
