Medellin Christmas Lights 2026 (Alumbrados)

The Alumbrados Navidenos de Medellin — known simply as the Alumbrados — is one of the most remarkable Christmas light displays in the world. Each year from 1 December to 15 January, the banks of the Rio Medellin and the city’s main parks and plazas are transformed by millions of LED lights arranged into animated installations, towering sculptures, and illuminated tunnels that draw an estimated five to eight million visitors over the six-week period.

Scale and character

The display is coordinated by EPM (Empresas Publicas de Medellin), the city’s public utility company, which has organised the Alumbrados since 1955. What began as simple street lighting for Christmas has evolved into a technically sophisticated public art event with themed installations changing each year. The Rio Medellin corridor from Parque de los Deseos in the north to Parque de los Pies Descalzos in the south forms the main viewing route, with illuminated bridges, riverside promenades, and installation zones spread along several kilometres of waterway.

Secondary locations include Parque Bello, the Pueblito Paisa on the Cerro Nutibara hill, Parque San Antonio, and the Jardin Botanico. Each location has its own themed display, and many local neighbourhoods also create smaller community light installations, making the Alumbrados feel city-wide rather than confined to a single site.

Best times to visit

The display runs nightly from roughly 6 p.m. to midnight. The most impressive viewing is on the Rio Medellin promenade between Avenida Oriental and the Parque de los Pies Descalzos. Weekend evenings draw the largest crowds; if you prefer a calmer experience, weeknight visits (particularly Monday to Wednesday) are noticeably quieter.

The first weekend of December typically features the official inauguration ceremony, which includes a countdown lighting sequence and live musical performances at the main riverside stage.

Getting there

The Metro Line A runs parallel to the Rio Medellin and provides direct access to multiple Alumbrados viewing points. The stations at Industriales, Poblado, and San Antonio all place you within a short walk of illuminated sections. Free shuttle buses (rutas gratuitas) typically operate from outlying neighbourhoods on weekend evenings during the display period — the city publishes the routes on the Alcaldia de Medellin website each December.

Practical tips

Evenings in Medellin in December are warm by Andean standards — around 20 to 23 degrees Celsius — but a light jacket is useful later in the night. Comfortable shoes are essential; the main promenade is extensive and most visitors walk several kilometres between zones.

Food vendors and temporary stalls operate throughout the main zones, selling buñuelos, natilla (a traditional Colombian Christmas dessert), and various hot drinks. Bring cash for stalls and smaller vendors.

The Alumbrados period coincides with the Feria de Cali (25 to 30 December in Cali) and general Colombian holiday travel. If you are visiting Medellin specifically for the lights, the early December weeks before Christmas tend to be less congested than the final week of December and the first week of January.
