San Gil Travel Guide
Plan your trip to San Gil - Colombia's adventure capital with white-water rafting, paragliding, caving, and the Chicamocha Canyon in Santander.
San Gil is where Colombians go when they want to get their heart rate up. This market town in the Santander department, five hours by bus from Bogota, has positioned itself around adventure tourism so effectively that it has become the default answer to âwhere should I go for outdoor activities in Colombia?â - and largely delivers on the promise.
The landscape is the reason. The RĂo Fonce and RĂo SuĂĄrez cut through the canyon country of Santander, creating conditions for serious white-water rafting. The cliffs above town are used for paragliding and rappelling. The surrounding hills have limestone cave systems and waterfalls. And 50 kilometres to the north, the Chicamocha Canyon drops two kilometres to one of Colombiaâs most dramatic river gorges.
The town itself is genuinely pleasant beyond the adventure industry - a colonial plaza, good coffee, and the day-trip options of Barichara (one of Colombiaâs most beautiful villages, 22 kilometres away) make it worth staying a few days.
Getting There and Around
From Bogota: Buses from Terminal del Norte take 5 to 6 hours and cost COP 50,000 to 70,000. Berlinas del Fonce and Copetran are reliable operators with multiple daily departures. The road through the Chicamocha Canyon on the final descent into Santander is spectacular - sit on the right for the views.
From Bucaramanga: The departmental capital is 90 kilometres north. Buses take approximately 2 hours and cost from COP 18,000. Bucaramanga has the nearest major airport (Palonegro International), so many international travellers fly there and transfer to San Gil by bus.
From Bogota by night bus: Overnight buses depart around 9 to 11pm and arrive in San Gil at 3 to 5am - not ideal for arriving rested. Better to take an afternoon bus and arrive in the early evening.
Within San Gil: The town centre is small and walkable. Most adventure operators are within a 10-minute walk of the main plaza. For Barichara (22km), colectivos leave from the main road beside the covered market for approximately COP 7,000 to 10,000 per person. For Chicamocha, book transport through your adventure operator or take a Bucaramanga-bound bus and ask to be dropped at the Panachi entrance.
Where to Stay in San Gil
Macondo Guesthouse (Centro) - from COP 110,000 per night (private room): One of the most recommended guesthouses in San Gil, popular with adventure travellers for its reliable information desk, comfortable hammock areas, and social common space. Dormitories from COP 40,000. Private rooms are good value. The owner knows the adventure operators well and can help you avoid the less reputable ones.
Samâs VIP Hostel (Centro) - from COP 45,000 dorm / COP 130,000 private: Long-running hostel with a strong reputation for organising activity packages. The bar and rooftop are popular in the evenings. A good choice if you want to meet other travellers and book activities through the hostel.
Hotel La Posada de San Gil (Centro) - from COP 160,000 per night: A solid mid-range hotel a block from the main plaza. Clean, reliable, with air conditioning and a small pool. Good for couples or travellers who want more comfort than a hostel without paying boutique prices.
Hotel Santander Plaza (Centro) - from COP 220,000 per night: The smartest hotel in the immediate centre, with a pool and on-site restaurant. Comfortable rooms and attentive service. Better suited for families or travellers not particularly interested in the hostel social scene.
Adventure Activities in San Gil
White-Water Rafting (RĂo Fonce and RĂo SuĂĄrez)
The RĂo Fonce offers Class III rapids and is the standard introduction - half-day trips from approximately COP 60,000 to 80,000 per person including equipment and a guide. For more experienced paddlers, the RĂo SuĂĄrez section upstream has Class IV to V sections that require prior rafting experience. Full-day packages on the SuĂĄrez with qualified guides cost approximately COP 120,000 to 180,000 per person. Recommended operators include Colombia Rafting Expeditions and Aventura Total, both on Carrera 10.
Paragliding
San Gil is one of the most accessible paragliding locations in Colombia. Tandem flights launching from the hills above the city (including the viewpoint near Parque el Gallineral) last 20 to 40 minutes and cost approximately COP 80,000 to 120,000 per person. No experience required for tandem. The best launch conditions are from 9am to 1pm before afternoon thermal activity builds.
Spelunking - Cueva del Indio and Cueva de la Vaca
The limestone hills around San Gil have multiple cave systems open to visitors. Cueva de la Vaca (about 8 kilometres from town) is the most popular - a half-day tour by jeep and on foot costs approximately COP 60,000 to 80,000 including headlamps and guide. Cueva del Indio is easier to access and suits families or those who prefer a gentler introduction.
Chicamocha Canyon and Panachi Park
The Parque Nacional del Chicamocha (commonly called Panachi) is 50 kilometres north toward Bucaramanga. The canyon here - the Cañón del Chicamocha - is over 2,000 metres deep and visually overwhelming. The parkâs cable car (telefĂ©rico) crosses the gorge in approximately 8 minutes and offers the best views. The park also has a zip line, waterfalls, and a cultural museum focused on Guane indigenous heritage. Entry approximately COP 45,000 as of 2026; cable car add-on approximately COP 35,000 extra.
Rappelling and Trekking
Cascada Juan Curi, 35 kilometres east of San Gil, offers rappelling down a 180-metre waterfall - one of the more striking outdoor experiences in the region. Tours include equipment and guide for approximately COP 80,000 to 100,000 per person including transport. The canyon hike back up afterward adds another hour.
Parque el Gallineral
Right in the town centre, this riverside park is covered in a species of bromeliad (Tillandsia usneoides - Spanish moss) that drapes from every tree. It is legitimately striking and completely unexpected. Entry approximately COP 5,000. Good for a morning or late afternoon walk.
Where to Eat in San Gil
Gringo Mikeâs (Centro) - mains from COP 22,000: The most famous restaurant in San Gil by reputation among backpackers. Enormous portions of Colombian classics and international comfort food. The bandeja paisa and burgers are the reliable choices. Good cocktails, sociable atmosphere, popular with tour groups.
El Mana Restaurante (Centro) - mains from COP 18,000: A local favourite for traditional Santandereano food. Order the pepitoria (a goat offal stew specific to Santander), mute santandereano (a thick corn and chickpea soup), and carne de cerdo (pork ribs). Not for the adventurous-food-averse, but genuinely excellent regional cooking.
Restaurante Doña Gloria (Mercado) - mains from COP 10,000: The market food stalls serve the cheapest and most authentic lunches in town. Doña Gloriaâs stall in the covered market does a three-course lunch for COP 10,000 to 12,000. The sopa del dĂa (soup of the day) is reliably good.
El Balcón del Parque (Main Plaza) - mains from COP 25,000: Good café and restaurant on the main square with reliable wifi, quality coffee, and a simple menu of arepas, sandwiches, and grills. A practical spot for breakfast or a mid-adventure refuel.
Practical Information
Booking activities: Shop around before committing to an operator. Prices are fairly standard across reputable companies, but safety standards vary. Ask your guesthouse for current recommendations - the landscape of operators changes. Avoid anyone who canât show you safety equipment before departure.
What to wear for activities: Synthetic or quick-dry clothing for rafting; leave cotton behind. Closed-toe sandals or old trainers for water activities. Layers for paragliding as altitude makes it cooler than ground level.
Day trip to Barichara: This colonial village 22 kilometres from San Gil is one of the most photographed in Colombia - cobbled streets, ochre and white colonial buildings, and a viewpoint over the Chicamocha canyon. A half-day excursion from San Gil is entirely feasible. Colectivos run when full from the San Gil market area for COP 7,000 to 10,000 per person.
Weather and river levels: December to February is ideal for water sports - rivers are at a manageable level. After heavy rain, river trips may be suspended for safety; operators will inform you same-day. Plan for a flexible itinerary if visiting during rainy season.
San Gil earns its reputation. It offers more concentrated outdoor activity options per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in Colombia, and the surrounding canyon landscape makes every activity more spectacular than the price suggests.
