Getting Around Cartagena: Taxis, Tuk-Tuks, and Walking the Walled City

Cartagena is a compact city in its most visited areas, and the Walled City in particular is best explored on foot. Beyond the colonial core, the practical choice is between taxis, electric mototaxis (known as tuk-tuks or mototaxis), and boats for reaching the beaches and islands.

Walking inside the Walled City

The interior of the walls covers roughly 2 square kilometres - a dense grid of colonial streets, plazas, and paseos that connects the main sights. Most visitors to the Walled City do not need any transport at all during the day.

Key walking distances:

• Torre del Reloj (Clock Tower) to Plaza de Santo Domingo: 8 minutes
• Plaza de Santo Domingo to Plaza de Bolivar: 5 minutes
• Plaza de Bolivar to Castillo San Felipe: 25 minutes on foot (uphill, or take a taxi for COP 6,000 to 8,000)
• Clock Tower to the city walls / Baluarte de San Francisco: 5 minutes

The walls themselves are walkable for approximately 11 kilometres all the way around, though the full circuit takes about 3 hours and is best done in the early morning before heat builds. The section overlooking the Caribbean between Baluarte de San Francisco and Hotel Hilton is the most scenic for sunset.

Footwear: The historic centre streets are flagstone and uneven in places. Sandals with grip and some ankle support are better than flat flip-flops for a full day of walking.

Heat management: Cartagena sits at sea level in the tropics with year-round temperatures of 28-33°C and high humidity. Midday (11am to 3pm) is genuinely punishing. Most experienced visitors take a long lunch in the shade or return to their hotel for a couple of hours, resuming sightseeing after 4pm when the light improves and temperature drops a few degrees.

Taxis

Taxis in Cartagena are metered but fares are often negotiated as fixed prices, especially in tourist areas. Approximate fares as of 2026:

• Walled City to Bocagrande beach: COP 10,000 to 15,000
• Walled City to Castillo San Felipe: COP 8,000 to 12,000
• Walled City to airport (Rafael Nunez): COP 12,000 to 20,000
• Getsemani to Walled City: COP 5,000 to 8,000
• Walled City to Muelle Turistico (tourist pier for island boats): COP 5,000 (it is also walkable in 10 minutes)

App-based rides: InDriver and Cabify both operate in Cartagena. InDriver allows you to propose a fare and the driver accepts - useful for confirming the price without negotiating face-to-face. Coverage is good in the Walled City, Getsemani, and Bocagrande.

Mototaxis and tuk-tuks

Electric three-wheeled mototaxis (a type of auto-rickshaw sometimes called tuk-tuks locally) operate throughout Cartagena and are a fast, cheap option for short trips. They navigate the narrow colonial streets better than cars and drop you directly at the entrance to your destination.

Typical fares: COP 3,000 to 6,000 for short Walled City or Getsemani trips. Always agree the price before boarding. They are informal operators - no meter, no app - so negotiation is part of the process.

Getting to Bocagrande from the Walled City

Bocagrande is approximately 4 kilometres south of the Walled City along Avenida Santander. A taxi runs COP 10,000 to 15,000. Some visitors walk the Avenida Santander waterfront promenade in the early morning when temperatures are manageable - it takes about 40 minutes on foot along the bay.

There is no metro or formal BRT system in Cartagena. Local buses (busetas) run on main roads but routes are difficult to navigate without Spanish and local knowledge.

Boats and water transport

For reaching the islands and beaches, the Muelle Turistico (Tourist Pier) near the Walled City is the main departure point. It is a 10-minute walk from the Clock Tower through the Getsemani neighbourhood.

• Shared lanchas to Playa Blanca: COP 50,000 to 70,000 return, depart approximately 8-9:30am
• Day trips to Rosario Islands: COP 100,000 to 150,000, various departure times
• Water taxis across the bay to Bocagrande: COP 5,000 (a novelty rather than a practical necessity)

Book island tours through operators at the official pier entrance or through your hotel. Informal sellers on the streets near the Clock Tower often represent oversubscribed boats or sell the same tours at inflated prices.

Cartagena to other destinations

• Barranquilla: Bus from Terminal Externo (20 minutes from Walled City by taxi, COP 15,000). Journey 2 hours, approximately COP 30,000.
• Santa Marta: Direct bus from Terminal Externo, 4 to 5 hours, approximately COP 50,000 to 70,000. Alternatively take the boat to Barranquilla and bus onward, but direct bus is simpler.
• Medellin: Bus from Terminal Externo, 12 to 13 hours overnight, approximately COP 90,000. Flying is the practical choice at COP 180,000 to 350,000 depending on advance booking.
• Bogota: Flying (55 minutes, from COP 150,000) far preferable to the 20+ hour bus journey.
